About
I am a PhD Candidate in the Department of Radio-Television-Film at the University of Texas at Austin. My research interests are broadly situated within popular culture, feminist theory, and ethnographic methods. Specifically, I am interested in girls’ media culture/production, third wave feminist activism, Internet cultures, celebrity, new femininities, and the gendering of neoliberalism.
I am currently working on my SSHRC-funded dissertation, an ethnographic project that examines girl bloggers as feminist activists who are part of a lengthy history of girls’ media production and feminist activism. Please see the research section of my website for more specific information about the project.
Prior to starting my doctorate degree I received a BA Honours in Sociology with a minor in Women’s and Gender Studies from the University of Saskatchewan (2005) and a Master’s of Journalism from the University of British Columbia (2007). I worked in the fashion magazine industry in New York City and Toronto before returning to academia in 2009, although I have yet to give up wearing heels.
